2021 Volkswagen Nivus debuts with coupe-like looks and powertrain choice

Volkswagen eventually stripped off the covers of the Nivus, the smallest SUV-coupe of the brand that will go on sale in South American markets first, before being rolled out in Europe next year.

With the new Volkswagen India 2.0 cars, the Nivus shares a good amount of its underpinnings. This means that the Nivus’ MQB A0 platform (for emerging markets) is very closely linked to the MQB A0 IN architecture and will form the base for the forthcoming Volkswagen Taigun SUV and the future VW sedan which will replace the Vento. The Nivus is 4,266 mm long and has a 2.56 m wheelbase which makes it comparable in size to the all-new Polo sold abroad. The  Nivus, at 445 liters, has a slightly bigger trunk compared to the Taigun’s 373 liters that will come to India.

The 2021 Volkswagen Nivus comes with a 1.0-liter TSI petrol engine churning out a respectable 128hp. There are also discussions of a 1.5-liter TSI engine, which will later join the line-up.

Although the Nivus will be positioned below the Taigun in the global spectrum of VW, the South American spec-SUV will feature a long list of features such as standard LED tail lamps, rear parking sensors, cruise control, multi-function steering wheel, electric wing mirrors, and rain-sensing wipers along with automatic headlights. A wireless instrument panel, paddle shifters, driving settings, and front parking sensors come in higher models. The top-spec Nivus R-Line trim is to include a new Discover Multimedia device, shiny black paint finish, and full LED headlamps in 17-inch alloy wheels.

The 2021 Volkswagen Nivus uses a modern, infotainment system developed by Brazil, entitled Volks Play. The 10.1-inch high-definition panel features a similar tech to the one used in recent European VWs, including an App Store with improved connectivity and wi-fi support. However, this infotainment device will be available on higher variants as an alternative.

The Volkswagen Nivus is Brazil’s first adaptive cruise-control model. It also provides automatic emergency braking. It also comes with six airbags and a driver drowsiness warning feature and is claimed to be industry segment-first.
