Mahindra Thar 1.5 Diesel 2WD To Launch In January

Along with a new variation, the Mahindra Thar will soon have a new powertrain choice. A 1.5-litre diesel engine will be added to Thar’s current lineup of 2.2-litre diesel and 2.0-liter turbo-petrol engines. Given that the Mahindra Thar 1.5 Diesel 2WD is under four metres long, the installation of the 1.5-litre diesel engine will also help it qualify for the lower tax level. Last month, during a gathering in Igatpuri, Maharashtra, dealers were given a demonstration of the Thar 1.5 diesel.

The 1.5-liter Thar engine will be the same 1,497cc unit that now powers the Marazzo, and it will produce 117hp. This engine will only be paired with a five-speed manual gearbox; an automatic transmission is not available. Furthermore, this engine will only be offered in 2WD form; it will not be equipped with the 4WD technology found on the more expensive Thar 2.2-litre diesel. Mahindra will be able to price the Thar more affordably thanks to this and the advantages that vehicles under four metres long provide.
The low-range gear lever on the centre console has been replaced with a new storage compartment, which is also plainly seen in spy photos of the Thar 1.5 diesel’s interior.

Mahindra will offer a 2WD edition of the Thar with the 2.0-liter turbo-petrol engine in addition to the new 1.5-litre diesel engine. The Thar 2.0 petrol 2WD will only be offered with a six-speed manual gearbox, just like the 1.5-litre diesel 2WD.

The entry-level soft-top variant with the 2.0-litre petrol engine cost Rs 9.8 lakh when Mahindra first debuted the now-discontinued Thar AX. On the other hand, the AX with a 2.2 diesel manual and 4WD started at Rs 10.2 lakh.

Mahindra can price the Thar 1.5 diesel 2WD under Rs 10 lakh, at least for the entry-level variant, by leaving out 4WD and using the smaller 1.5-litre engine that offers excise advantages. This would offer Mahindra an edge against the new Maruti Jimny, whose starting price is anticipated to be in excess of Rs 10 lakh.

According to sources, the Mahindra Thar 1.5 Diesel 2WD with the 1.5-litre diesel and 2.0-liter gasoline engines would go on sale sometime in January 2023. Maruti Suzuki will also unveil the 5-door Jimny during the Auto Expo 2023 this month. However, Mahindra won’t be at the Auto Expo this year.
