Range Rover Velar Facelift Revealed
With the Range Rover Velar undergoing a big mid-life update intended to increase its appeal for the last few years on sale, the Land Rover lineup is still being reinvented.
Three years after being on sale in India in 2018, the Velar underwent a mechanical upgrade, most notably adding a plug-in hybrid option. The Porsche Macan rival from Solihull, UK, may become a more significant element of the lineup as a result of this series of improvements, which are considerably more noticeable and extensive.
A major advancement for 2023 is the Velar P400e plug-in hybrid, which now offers an 11-kilometer increase in EV-only range owing to a battery capacity increase from 13.6 to 19.2 kWh.
The P400e continues to combine a 143 horsepower electric motor in the transmission with a 300 horsepower, 2.0-liter four-cylinder petrol engine for a total output of 404 horsepower and 640 Nm.
It can accelerate quickly, reaching a peak speed of 209 kph in just 5.4 seconds from 0 to 100 kph.
The 2.0-liter four-cylinder petrol engine produces 250 horsepower without the help of an electric motor, but the other three engine choices—a 2.0-liter four-pot diesel with 204 horsepower and a pair of 3.0-liter straight-six engines—one gasoline and one diesel, with 400 horsepower and 300 horsepower, respectively—all have mild hybrid assistance.
The 5.0-liter V8-powered, limited-edition SV Autobiography has not made another appearance.
The new Velar’s exterior distinguishes it from the pre-facelift car thanks to new LED light designs, a new front grille, and a redesigned back bumper.
The Velar’s new cockpit configuration, which aligns it with its larger Range Rover and Range Rover Sport siblings, is the most noticeable difference.
The new 11.4-inch “floating” touchscreen that runs the most recent version of JLR’s Pivi Pro infotainment system is the centerpiece of this.
According to Land Rover, 80% of all actions may be completed with just two screen taps. A redesigned “pre-drive” panel for frequently used functions, Amazon Alexa voice control capabilities, and permanently visible temperature and audio settings are all included in the new Pivi Pro model for 2023.
A new, minimalist center console with a concealed storage compartment and wireless phone charger is located below the new touchscreen. This console lacks any physical buttons and no longer has a separate touchscreen for temperature control.
Prices for the revised Velar start at GBP 54,045 for the entry-level D200 S and go up to GBP 79,825 for the top-spec P400 Autobiography, while the Velar P400e is available for GBP 64,745 (approximately Rs 64.47 lakh) (roughly Rs 65.26 lakh).
The ultimate cost of the India-spec Velar should, however, be higher due to import taxes. The Porsche Macan, Jaguar F-Pace, Mercedes-Benz GLE coupe, and BMW X6 are competitors of the Velar in India.
By 2026, Land Rover will offer six all-electric models, including electric versions of the Range Rover, Range Rover Sport, Discovery, Discovery Sport, Evoque, and Defender.
As its siblings transition to one of two new EV-compatible architectures—the EMA for the smaller Discovery Sport and Evoque and the MLA for the bigger 4x4s—questions remain over what will happen to the mid-sized Velar after this generation.
