BYD Seal To Make Its Debut At Auto Expo 2023

At the Auto Expo, the all-new Seal sedan will be on display for the first time in India by BYD, the Chinese EV-only brand. A born-electric sedan, the BYD Seal is the company’s response to the well-liked Tesla Model 3 in regions like Europe and China.

The BYD Seal is 106mm longer, 58mm narrower, and 17mm taller than the Model 3 at 4,800mm long, 1875mm width, and 1460mm height. The wheelbase of the Tesla is 2875mm, which is 45mm less than the wheelbase of the Seal at 2,920mm.

The Ocean X idea from 2021 serves as inspiration for the Seal’s design, which also adheres to BYD’s “ocean aesthetics” design language. Along with the Dolphin, it maintains the ocean-themed naming used across the BYD EV lineup.

A coupe-like all-glass roof, flush-fitting door handles, four boomerang-shaped LED daytime running lights, a split headlamp design, and a full-width LED light bar at the back are just a few of the unique touches found on the Seal.

The BYD Seal features a spinning, 15.6-inch infotainment display in the center console, along with a head-up display and a 10.25-inch digital instrument cluster for the driver. The drive selector and a scroll wheel to choose from the different drive modes are located below the floating touchscreen, which is surrounded by the central AC vents. Basic controls for features like a heated windscreen, an audio system volume control, and two wireless charging pads are also located in the center console.

The Seal incorporates BYD’s Blade battery technology, which will be found in additional EVs in India, including those made by Maruti Suzuki and Toyota, as well as in other countries. The Seal has two battery packs: an 82.5kWh unit and a 61.4kWh unit, both of which are based on BYD’s e-Platform 3.0. On the China Light-Duty Vehicle Test Cycle (CLTC-cycle), the former has a range of 550 km, while the latter has a range of 700 km. The larger battery has a charging capacity of 150kW, compared to 110kW for the smaller battery.

The sedan also offers a choice of single-motor and dual-motor powertrains; the former can only be ordered with the larger battery, whilst the former can be paired with any battery in the case of the single motor.

The dual-motor version has an all-wheel drive setup, with the front-mounted motor producing 218 horsepower and the rear-mounted motor producing 312 horsepower. They generate 530 horsepower when combined, with a claimed 0-100kph timing of 3.8 seconds. The 650km range of the 82.5kWh battery in this configuration is possible (CLTC cycle).

In addition to the Seal, BYD will also showcase the Atto 3 and the e6 MPV, both of which start at Rs 29.15 lakh in India (both prices ex-showroom, India).
