Jeep Grand Wagoneer Concept Unveiled, launch in 2021
In unveiling the Grand Wagoneer idea, Fiat Chrysler Automobiles(FCA), Jeep’s parent company, has decided to revive the Wagoneer nameplate. By launching an upscale, compact, and luxurious three-row SUV in both a regular and Grand avatars, the automaker is taking back the Wagoneer name.
For comparison, the Wagoneer was the Italian-American carmaker’s boxy station wagon that was discontinued during the 1990s. It was reborn as a full-size luxury SUV and is expected to take on, to name a few, the likes of Range Rover, Land Rover Discovery, Chevrolet Tahoe, and BMW X7. So far only the idea of the Grand Wagoneer has been released.
At FCA’s Warren manufacturing facility in Michigan, both the Jeep Wagoneer and the Jeep Grand Wagoneer are expected to go into production in the first half of 2021. It is not expected that the final production-spec model will differ a lot from the concept shown. Since the Commander, the Wagoneer will be the automaker’s first full-size three-row SUV and will offer a wide range of powertrain options and premium configurations.
The Jeep Grand Wagoneer will be developed on a new platform designed for engine, hybrid, and electrified IC (Internal Combustion) powertrains. The Jeep Grand Wagoneer essentially is a RAM 1500 pick-up truck SUV iteration. Like RAM 1500, a body-on-frame chassis will also feature in the Wagoneer models, but the latter will employ an independent rear suspension rather than the solid rear axle of the former.
Official details about the range of powertrains have not been provided, although one expects the RAM 1500 to share its power plants with Jeep. The Ram 1500 comes with three engine options and all of them are also set to feature in the Wagoneer.
First up is a 3.6-liter V-6 hybrid-assisted petrol engine, a 5.7-liter V8 petrol unit, and a 3.0-liter V6 turbodiesel engine. It is also said to be selling a plug-in hybrid (PHEV). 4WD is expected to become normal. The FCA’s 9-speed automatic gearbox is said to perform the transmission duties.
With respect to architecture, Jeep has let go of most of the Wagoneer signature elements in the definition of Grand Wagoneer. The architecture showcases it as a calm, self-assured vehicle. It has tonnes of chrome all over and stands on massive chunky tires, 24 inches long. In its badging, grille, and headlamp set, it sports intricate design. The pillars stand completely vertically that looks a little awkward.
Since it is a luxury SUV, it is expected to deliver lots of features inside the cabin Some of them are a 12.1-inch center touchscreen that sits above a 10.3-inch touchscreen with HVAC system controls, a 12.1-inch fully digital instrument cluster, Uconnect5 networking features, and a McIntosh stereo system with 23 speakers and many more. It will have a three-row configuration with seven- and eight-person seating setups.
The Wagoneer was first launched as a 1963 model in 1962 and is a special vehicle as it was the first 4WD vehicle to feature an automatic transmission, setting the foundation for modern SUVs. The Jeep Wagoneer and the Jeep Grand Wagoneer are priced at $60,000 and $100,00 respectively, on the heavier side. The production-spec model could be expected to be out on the market by the end of next year.
