Mercedes-AMG GLE 53 To Launch On September 23

On 23 September 2020, the Mercedes GLE Coupe will return to its second generation. It will be released in 435hp AMG 53 4Matic+ guise, and reservations for this high-performance GLE Coupe hybrid will begin on September 8th, on the online sales portal of Mercedes-Benz India and its dealer network.

Mercedes-AMG GLE 53

As their name suggests, the GLE Coupe is the Coupe-SUV variant of the new Mercedes GLE on sale in India. Mercedes-Benz India has chosen to bring the all-new GLE Coupe in six-cylinder, mild-hybrid AMG 53 form to our market; only the full-fat, V8-powered GLE 63 is above it. From 2016 onwards the previous-gen GLE Coupe was available in India in the form of AMG GLE 43Coupe, with a 365hp, 3.0-liter V6 turbo-petrol engine, and this AMG GLE 53 is its direct successor.

The new Mercedes-AMG GLE 53 Coupe will be available with a 3.0-liter, twin-turbo, straight-six petrol engine generating a peak torque of 435hp and 520Nm. A 48V mild-hybrid system – Mercedes’ branded EQ Boost – adds up to 22hp and 250Nm torque on launch. Power is transmitted to all four wheels through an automatic 9-speed transmission and Merc’s all-wheel-drive system, 4Matic+. The German brand reports a 5.3 seconds sprint time of 0-100kph and a restricting top speed of 250kph.

The Coupe-SUV looks like its regular SUV sibling from the front, apart from adding the vertical-slatted ‘Panamericana’ AMG grille, but there’s a noticeable difference from the sides and the rear. The GLE Coupe boasts a steeper windscreen and rear window rake, along with a tailor-made rear-end to account for the sloping roof. 20-inch alloy wheels are standard, but 21-inch and 22-inch wheels may be available as options. The AMG badge also means that some design elements add a sporty flair, such as the AMG exhaust twin tailpipe, side skirts, and spoiler.

The new Mercedes-AMG GLE 53 cabin is very similar to the GLE standard; you would be hard-pressed to find variations, in reality. Both have the same dashboard configuration that is dominated by two 12.3-inch displays (for infotainment and instrument cluster) and an integrated grab handles elevated center console. The GLE 53 Coupe is supposed to get front sports seats and a steering wheel for the Nappa leather.

The new model is more spacious on the inside compared to the previous-gen GLE Coupe-the wheelbase is a little longer and the boot capacity is also around 50 liters higher. The rear seats are divided and folded (40/20/40) to free up even more luggage space.

Wait for the equipment list on the new Mercedes-AMG GLE 53 Coupe to feature the likes of nine airbags, a six-way powered rear seat, automatic emergency braking, a 360-degree camera, a head-up display, adjustable suspension with active anti-roll bars, and a Burmester sound system with 13 speakers.

Mercedes-AMG GLE 53

Given the powertrain and the features on offer, expect a price tag for the Mercedes-AMG GLE 53 4Matic+ Coupe north of Rs 1.25 crore (ex-showroom). The GLE Coupe, like the BMW X6, Porsche Cayenne Coupe, and Audi Q8, will find competition.
