Mercedes-Benz All-Electric To Be On Field By 2030

Mercedes-Benz has unveiled its new electric vehicle strategy, with the goal of going all-electric by the end of the decade if market conditions allow.

Mercedes plans to invest over €40 billion (Rs. 3.5 lakh crores) in battery electric vehicles between 2022 and 2030, according to the new EV plan.
At the same time, by 2026, the automaker plans to cut investments in combustion engines and plug-in hybrid technology by 80%. By 2025, electric vehicles are expected to account for 50% of total sales.

Mercedes will rely on common battery platforms and scalable electric architectures to cut costs, while the brand will introduce more AMG and Maybach models and take more direct control over pricing and sales to increase profitability.

From 2025 onwards, the corporation, which will have EVs in all sectors by next year, will debut three electric-only architectures that will cover all bases, from cars to vans.
MB.EA (passenger cars), AMG.EA (performance cars), and VAN.EA (vans) will be the three architectures (vans and light commercial vehicles).

Mercedes will make considerable steps to price its vehicles competitively, including the acquisition of UK-based electric motor manufacturer YASA, through which Mercedes will have access to unique axial flux motor technology.

Mercedes will also have the expertise to build ultra-high-performance motors, and China is likely to play a crucial role in helping Mercedes-Benz accelerate its electrification goal.

While the firm already has plans to build nine battery systems facilities, under the Mercedes-Benz All-Electric plan, it will build eight Giga factories to produce cells, since it will require more than 200-gigawatt hours (GWh) of battery capacity in the future.

Mercedes has also announced that it will team up with GROB (a German company that specializes in battery manufacturing and automation technologies) to boost its battery production capacity.

Apart from working to boost range throughout a model’s production lifecycle, Mercedes will collaborate with companies to develop batteries with “exceptional range” and “even faster charging times.”

Essentially, the company hopes to attain a single digit kWh per 100 km and is already working on the Vision EQXX, an electric vehicle with a real-world range of over 1000 kilometers. It will be unveiled in 2022, and its technology will be used in future Mercedes-Benz electric vehicles.

The Mercedes-Benz All-Electric plan, of course, includes charging. With the commercial launch of the EQS later this year, the company’s ‘Plug & Charge’ program, which eliminates identification and payment processing, will go live.

While Mercedes me Charge offers more than 5.3 lakh AC and DC charging sites around the world, the company will collaborate with Shell to provide an additional 30,000 charge points in Europe, North America, and China by 2025.

Mercedes claims that premium charging stations would be set up across Europe, offering a “bespoke charging experience with top-notch facilities.”
