2021 Ford Equator SUV Revealed
After a series of leaked and spy-shots, the Ford Equator SUV has been eventually unveiled. Although this new SUV will be on sale first in China, it has some similarities with the next Ford and Mahindra SUVs in India.
The 2021 Ford Equator is a whole new SUV, nearly 5 meters long, above Endeavor. Ford and its partner Jangling have co-developed it and will first be sold in China. The new SUV will compete with three other famous SUVs sold worldwide such as Volkswagen Tiguan AllSpace and the China-only Jeep Grand Commander, among others.
Equator moniker is not new to Ford, since designs of the same name have been demonstrated by the company previously. Suzuki even sold a truck of the same name on the Nissan Frontier market a couple of years ago.
The 2021 Ford Equator is 4,905mm long, 1,930mm wide, 1,755mm high, and has a 2,865mm wheelbase. This makes it bigger than the 4903mm long, 1869mm wide and 1837mm bigger Ford Endeavour.
The design is fresh, full of split-headlight configuration, which is now popular in new SUVs, especially those sold in China and India. It has an impressive grill, a gloss black finish, and delicate bits of chrome all over. The front bumper has a chromium outline, along with a strong chromium bumper on the bottom. The SUV is subtly covered on the entire side and features chunky alloy wheels that contribute to its robust appearance.
This latest Ford design language can be used on more SUVs and cross-over platforms, such as the next-generation Ford Edge, the highly modified Ford EcoSport, and Ford as a by-product of the forthcoming Indian Mahindra XUV500 SUV.
Although the exterior of the 2021 Ford Equator is distinctive in style, the interior is the main topic of discussion with this modern Ford SUV. With multi-contouring seating that can be converted into either 6 or 7-seater configuration, the three-row arrangement is quite plush.
The interior texture improves the appearance and makes the Ford SUV look very luxurious. The Ford Equator dashboard is yet another critical interior feature that we might soon see in India. It offers a very Mercedes-like double panel configuration, the first is for instrumentation and the second has a 12,3-inch measurement for the infotainment system.
On the test mules for the coming XUV500 in India, the same dashboard style with twin-screens and a very close look at steering wheels was observed and the new Mahindra XUV500 was co-developed by Ford as we said earlier. The explanation for this is that the XUV500 and the Equator have been very similar in interior design. While the interior of the India XUV500 is not fully seen, we anticipate that the SUV will get a similar appearance later this year.
The 2021 Ford Equator is to be sold in China later this month and a 2.0 liter EcoBoost petrol engine is to be powered by the SUV, good for around 225hp. A basic front-wheel-drive setup will be equipped with an optional AWD variant.
The EcoSport ES, which has been special in tailgate design only used in an export version, was recently launched by Ford India. In addition, Endeavour, Figo hatchback, the Aspire compact sedan, and the Freestyle cross-hatchback are also available on the Indian market.
