Hero EV Scooter Launch Delayed
Even the world’s largest two-wheeler manufacturer appears to be subject to delays when it comes to launching an EV.
Hero teased an upcoming electric scooter in August 2021, and the brand confirmed in November that this scooter would launch in March 2022. The company has just unveiled its new Vida brand, under which EVs will be sold, with the first model set to be unveiled on July 1, 2022.
It’s unclear whether the delay is due to product issues or a legal battle between Hero MotoCorp and Hero Electric over the use of the Hero Electric brand name for EVs.
Hero, which owns a 35% stake in Ather Energy, has made a lot of EV news in the last year. In 2021, Hero also announced a partnership with Taiwan-based Gogoro, and it will be interesting to see if this upcoming EV will use a battery swapping system similar to the one used by Gogoro.
The Hero EV Scooter itself was only shown briefly in Hero MotoCorp’s 10-year anniversary celebration video. That was enough to tell me it has a fairly standard scooter shape, with a mid-mounted motor and a single-sided rear suspension.
The Hero EV Scooter will be manufactured at Hero’s newest plant in Chittoor, Andhra Pradesh, which began operations in March 2020.
