India-bound 2021 Audi A3 sedan-Overlook.
The last-gen 2021 Audi A3 was India’s first of the ‘compact luxury sedans.’ This proved, along with the Mercedes-Benz CLA which followed just a few months later, that there was a major appeal in going small. The hook may have been a fairly low price but what also succeeded was that there was nothing entry-level about how the A3 looked, sounded, or moved.
The 2021 Audi A3 holds clear to the template of Audi sedan design, with zippy proportions and a clean-cut structure. There is a gentler flow to the back of the roofline but this remains a classic sedan with three doors. If not the shape, sure styling as the new A3 sedan gives this car away. Audi’s massive single-frame grille is, of course, the major focus at the front, and providing an additional undertone of sportiness is its honeycomb mesh here. Headlights sharply cut fringe the enormous grille, and oddly different models of the A3 will feature different designs for the LED DRLs. A contoured bonnet and well-defined flanks add volume to the A3 and the back has some really interesting details. The tiny spoiler on top of the boot lid can be operationalized in carbon fiber, while the taillights receive a unique LED signature–external vertical stripe and inside horizontal pattern.
The A3 cabin is heavy on electronics as you would have anticipated. The infotainment system has a 10.1-inch touchscreen, a regular 10.25-inch screen for the Virtual Cockpit digital dials, and a head-up display was also included in a first on the A3. But certain modifications can just be a step far enough. For context, there is a volume control touchpad that comes in place of a traditional physical dial. And while the A3 automatic gets shift-by-wire tech, the selector of pen drive sized gears appears a little fiddly. The latest A3 is almost similar in size to the outgoing model, but Audi says more headroom and elbow room are available upfront.
The abroad market will get the 2021 Audi A3 with the option of a 150hp, 2.0liter diesel engine; but despite Audi India ‘s broader shift away from diesel engines, that engine will probably be missing India. The Indian-spec A3 will have a 1.5-liter, 150hp turbo-petrol engine driving the front wheels.
